Um gosto privado um olhar público: Doações (A personal taste, a public look: Donations)
Museu Nacional de Arqueologia

Presentation

The exhibition «A Personal Taste – A Public Look. Donations», which evokes the recent donation of an important collection by an individual, displays for the first time the three most important donations made till now to the Museum. From D. Luís Bramão’s magnificent archaeological collection, the most recent donor, the cinerary urns, the Villanovan and Etrurian pots and the Greek ceramics are outstanding. And finally, due to its rarity, there is a unique Etrurian mirror in bronze with the representation of «Paris’s Judgement» The archaeological nucleus from Francisco Barros e Sá’s collection, which was integrated in 1984 in the Museum, is composed of very diversified pieces covering eras and cultures since Prehistory up to the Middle Ages. Remarkable are the Egyptian objects (figurative bronzes, amulets, shawabtis, terracottas…), the Greek ceramics, the Etrurian candelabrums, the ointment containers and the Roman oil lamps, some of oriental thematic and, above all, an important treasure of Iberian silver pots. In the nucleus of archaeological pieces from António Júdice Bustorff Silva’s collection, donated in 1959, there stands out a set of pieces, probably acquired in the South of Spain, which is composed of Iron Age “Iberian Votive Bronzes”, so rare in the collections of the Portuguese Museums and ceramics of “paredes finas” from Betica. Equally important are the sets of old jewellery and the glass containers from the Roman Era.
