On MatrizNet you may access information on the collections of the Portuguese Museums coordinated by the General-Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the Regional Directorates for Culture of North, Center and Alentejo, and Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua. Please read this page in order to easily access the information you are looking for.

Home Page

On the MatrizNet home page you can choose the language of the interface of the contents research – Portuguese (PT) or English (EN).

You can also use the field in the bottom left-corner of this page to make your full-text search.

Research

You can search information available on MatrizNet by using the three kinds of research tools:

•  Full-text research
•  Oriented research
•  Advanced research

Regardless of the type of research chosen, the primary order of records obtained will be made sequentially according to the inventory number of each item.

Full-text research consists of a text field where you can type one or more terms. Boolean operators (and, or, without, +/-) do not operate in full-text research. Therefore the result will bring back all records that contain any of these terms, regardless of their order.

Please remember that you must use valid terms of research:

•  Valid term of research: «sculpture statue»
•  Wrong term of research: «sculpturestatue»

Oriented research gives you access to contents available on MatrizNet which are organized:

•  By Museum
Returns information on all items in the collection of the Museum you choose.

•  By Subject
Returns information on all items related the Subject you choose, regardless of the Museum they belong to.

•  By Author
Returns information on all items produced by the Author you choose, regardless of the Museum they belong to. When available on MatrizNet, besides the information on each object you will also access the biography of its Author.

•  By Exhibition
Returns information on all items displayed at the exhibition you choose.

•  By Date
Returns information on all items available on MatrizNet pertaining to the period or date you circumscribed in the timeline. Please remember to use the time unit (Years, Centuries, Millions of Years) appropriated to the kind of object or collection you are looking for.

Advanced research allows you to combine multiple criteria of research in order to find the information you desire much more accurately.

It also allows you to progress in your research, by progressively adding or removing search parameters.

You must press the CTRL button + the left hand button of the mouse for the multiselection field.

•  Museum: multiselection field regarding the Museums represented on MatrizNet.

•  Supercategory: selection, through a check-box, of the following options: Archaeology, Art, Ethnography, Natural History\Earth Sciences , Natural History\Life Sciences, Science and Technology.

•  Category: multiselection field from the many kinds of collections available on MatrizNet (for example painting, ceramics, furniture, etc.).

•  Author: multiselection field organized alphabetically containing every author represented on MatrizNet.

•  Date: use the checkbox of the appropriated time unit (Years, Centuries, Millions of Years) and type in the text fields the exact date (or approximated dates) to circumscribe the date of production/origin.

On the remaining fields of the form of Advanced Research, the criteria required should be introduced freely.

•  Name / Title: text field for the research of the main source of the identity of the object, consisting of its formal name (for example sand glass, harp, dress, clock, etc.) or its respective Title, whether the original title given by the author, or another for which it has been known throughout time.

•  Production: research according to the place where it was produced (for instance country, town, production centre, etc.).

•  Cultural Group: research according to the social context of the production and/or use of the object/collection. This criterion is used mostly in ethnographic and archaeological collections.

•  Technical Information: a field to research materials, techniques and supports used in the production of an object (such as clay, wood, stone, canvas, watercolour, etc.), as well as the respective brand, model and series number for industrial productions.

•  Inventory number: a field for introducing the exact term required. By activating the checkbox you will also search the same term (ex: MNA 2003.14.01) in the database field where out-of-date or Previous inventory number(s) of the object are recorded.

In these fields, as well as in all other free-text search fields (Epoch/Period, Iconography/Heraldry, Description, Origin/History), you may type in one or more terms. For instance, if in the Description field you introduce the words «blue yellow», only the records that contain both words will be presented, regardless of the order in which they were introduced. If you search records related only to the terms «blue» or «yellow», you must make separate researches.

MatrizNet does not distinguish capital and lowercase letters. Accents are also not taken into account, which means that researching «mobiliário» (furniture) will produce the same results as «mobiliario».

Research Result and Visualization

Each item is identified by its inventory number. If no term is typed in the full-text research mode, or if no criteria are used in the advanced research mode, MatrizNet will return all records.

The navigation panel indicates, on the right hand of the research result, the total number of pages with results and allows you to navigate to the next pages (for example page 2 of 66). The total number of records that results from a given query is also identified.

MatrizNet allows you to visualize the result of the research in two ways:

•  Album: every record is identified by its photo and the following information: Name/Title, Museum, inventory number;

•  List: every record is identified by its photo and the following information: Museum, Supercategory, Category, Subcategory, Name/Title, Author/Production, Date, inventory number.

You may change you Visualizing mode at any time.

Detailed information of the item

By clicking on the photo of an object you will have access to a new page with the respective detailed information: Museum, inventory number, Supercategory, Category, Subcategory, Name/Title, Author, Place of Production, Production Centre, Workplace/manufacturer, Representative, Date, Technical Information, Dimensions, Description, Provenance and History.

When available, associated information to the object will be shown at the botton of its record: a) Iconography/Heraldry, Marks/Inscriptions, Exhibitions, Bibliography, Multimedia; b) Inventory records associated to the item and elements of the group it belongs to.
